The Deutsche Bank announced this Wednesday (16) that it intends to launch a digital asset custody service for institutional and corporate clients in Europe as early as 2026. The launch depends on completion of the regulatory process and will have initial support for Bitcoin, Ether and stablecoins.
The service will allow clients to keep digital assets in the bank's custody and make transfers to third parties. Deutsche Bank will be responsible for managing wallets and private keys, reducing the need for each institution to build its own custody infrastructure.
In addition to Bitcoin and Ether, the initial offering will include the stablecoins USDC, EURC and EURAU. The list may be expanded based on client demand and internal approval, risk management and regulatory processes. Tokenized financial instruments are also on the bank's roadmap.
First clients are expected to come on board as early as 2026
The offering will initially be aimed at clients of the Corporate Bank and Investment Bank divisions, including companies, asset managers, hedge funds, custodians, brokerages and sovereign institutions. Admission to the service will depend on the due diligence and risk criteria adopted by Deutsche Bank.
The infrastructure will have hardware-based key protection, multi-person approvals and separate connected and offline storage environments — known as warm and cold storage. The bank also plans redundant systems, backup and recovery mechanisms, in addition to using external vendors for specific technical components.
The initiative broadens a push begun a few years ago. In 2023, Deutsche Bank formed a partnership with Swiss company Taurus to develop custody services for cryptocurrencies and tokenized assets for institutional clients.
The launch, however, remains subject to completion of the regulatory process. The bank itself stresses that the timeline, geographic availability and assets offered may still change depending on regulatory requirements, internal approvals and client demand.
