Sensor Tower analyst Carl Kontus told GamesIndustry.biz on Thursday (13) that 89% of GTA 6 pre-orders are for the US$ 100 Ultimate Edition. The basic version of the Rockstar Games title costs US$ 80.
By platform, the share is around 90% on Xbox and 88.5% on PlayStation. The numbers reinforce Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick's statement that orders are concentrated in the most expensive package.
Unprecedented result
Kontus said he had never seen such a high share of a premium edition in pre-orders. "I have never seen a 90% share for the premium version. A 50% share is a great result; the normal range is between 10% and 20%," he compared.
The analyst attributed the demand to the US$ 20 difference from the standard edition and the extra content, such as vehicles, weapons, and special locations. He also said Take-Two could have launched a US$ 150 version given the interest.
Estimated 25 million pre-orders
Sensor Tower counts around 4.3 million pre-orders, with 77% on PlayStation and 23% on Xbox Series X|S. The most realistic expectation is 25 million units by launch, which would represent around US$ 2 billion in revenue before release.
By comparison, Cyberpunk 2077 reached launch with more than 8 million pre-orders. Kontus noted, however, that the final stretch could reduce the Ultimate Edition's lead as casual buyers come in.
