Microsoft announced the merger of the Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot apps into a single app, which will now be called Microsoft Copilot and receives a new icon. Distribution begins in mid-August for mobile and web, and in September for Windows and macOS.
The update unifies Copilot’s chat and image creation with the Microsoft 365 features for work, according to the company. Microsoft says the change is a technical milestone in preparation for the ‘super app’ planned for this year.
Transition to the new app
Current Copilot users will be transferred to the new version with chats and content preserved. Microsoft 365 Copilot users, meanwhile, will have minor navigation changes, a new icon, and access to the Copilot chat. Those who use both apps will have unified chats and content, but personal and work account data will remain separate.
Personal and corporate accounts will remain separate, with the ability to switch between them in the app. Copilot’s main features will continue to be free, although some users may see different usage limits in the free experience.
Discontinued features
Podcasts and Deep Research will be retired and will stop working after August 18. Messages and group chat content will not be transferred to the new app. Features such as Shopping and Copilot Health may be temporarily unavailable during the rollout.
The unification comes months after Microsoft named a new head of Copilot to manage the assistant across consumer and commercial areas. The company has been steering the product toward the corporate audience, moving away from the original design presented in 2024, when Mustafa Suleyman took over the AI division.
