NC, formerly known as NCSoft, announced it will take over global publishing of the MMORPG Throne and Liberty, currently operated by Amazon Game Studios. The service migration is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2026, according to a company statement.
The company will manage the game under a single online service. FirstSpark Games, a subsidiary of NC, is collaborating with Amazon to transfer technical and operational services, maintaining the game environment and assets across all platforms. Player account data will remain unchanged on Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, and NC's cross-platform game service, Purple.
In a statement, NC said that “for years, Throne and Liberty has been shaped by an incredible community under Amazon Game Studios.” “As creators of Throne and Liberty, we believe this is the right time for us to take a more direct role in supporting the game and shaping its future,” it added.
FirstSpark Games CEO Moonyoung Choi said that Amazon Game Studios has been an excellent partner and that the team is grateful for having launched and maintained the MMO so far. “Taking a more direct role in global publishing makes a lot of sense for us, and we are excited to lead the next chapter of Throne and Liberty directly as NC,” he said.
Context
Throne and Liberty was released in October 2024 and surpassed three million players in its first week. Despite that, Amazon Game Studios' MMO portfolio has shrunk. In January, the company announced the closure of New World: Aeternum, whose development was paused last year after layoffs. The following month, it announced the end of King of Meat, from Glowmade, after the game failed to find the expected audience. In May, reports indicated the cancellation of the Lord of the Rings MMO, developed in partnership with Embracer Group and Middle Earth Enterprises.
