Game File and Variety reported that Netflix will cease operations of two game studios, Night School Studio and Moonloot Games, to focus on party games for TVs.
Affected studios
Night School Studio, creator of the Oxenfree series, was acquired by Netflix in 2021 and released the horror game Unhinged for TVs and a Black Mirror mobile title in 2025. Moonloot Games, based in Helsinki, was founded in 2022.
Netflix spokesperson Chrissy Kelleher said the company will continue prioritizing areas such as kids', party, narrative and mainstream games, and that it will make organizational changes to align with these priorities. She added that the company will eliminate "some" additional roles in the games area, including that of Tara Voelker, who described herself as the team's "only accessibility person."
Strategy shift
The move represents a shift from the previous approach, centered on mobile games with prestigious independent titles. Last year, Netflix closed the studio behind a Squid Game title and sold Spry Fox, of Cozy Grove, back to its original owners. In 2024, it shut down an AAA studio that never released a game.
