OpenAI announced the end of the supply of its models to Cursor in a statement published on Friday (28), after the platform's acquisition by SpaceX. According to the company, access will be terminated on November 12, 2026, and future models will also not be made available to the service.
The company said it is using the maximum period allowed by the contract to give more time to developers who depend on its models within Cursor.
OpenAI cites history of Musk's companies
According to OpenAI, the decision was made because the company does not have sufficient confidence that SpaceX will use its technology within the established terms.
As justification, the company cited episodes involving other companies of Elon Musk. OpenAI claims that the former Twitter, now part of SpaceX, breached terms of a contract after Musk's acquisition. The company also cited a sworn statement in which Musk acknowledged that xAI, now integrated into SpaceX, had violated OpenAI's terms of service.
The contract with Cursor allows its cancellation within a limited window after a change of control. With the acquisition by SpaceX, OpenAI decided to exercise this clause.
The decision will also affect the company's next models. OpenAI confirmed that will not provide future models to Cursor, including Astra, while it prepares to end the current agreement.
Despite the decision, OpenAI stressed that it has worked with Cursor for nearly four years and stated that it maintains great respect for the team, the product, and what the company has built for the developer community.
