OpenAI on Tuesday launched the preview version of the ChatGPT desktop app for Linux, which brings together ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and the Codex coding agent in a single package.
The software is compatible with Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44, with .deb and .rpm packages for x64 and ARM64 architectures. The app includes an integrated browser, Chrome extensions, and voice control.
The launch, however, does not include native computer access, which prevents controlling desktop applications like GIMP or OpenOffice via ChatGPT. Features such as Appshots, Record & Reply, and voice commands for desktop apps will also not be available at launch, according to an OpenAI spokesperson.
Mac and Windows versions arrived in July. On Linux, the Codex CLI and IDE extension were already working before this preview. The new app mainly adds a visual interface for tracking multiple projects, files, and code changes. For terminal users, the CLI remains the most direct option.
The app is available worldwide.
