Sony Interactive Entertainment announced this Tuesday (13) the PS5 Digital Edition Midnight Black, a new version of the console intended exclusively for the Japanese market. The device will cost ¥55,000, with taxes included, and will arrive in stores on November 19, 2026, with pre-orders starting October 20.

Despite the new black finish, the main distinguishing feature is the usage restrictions. The console works only with the system in Japanese and PlayStation accounts registered in Japan, conditions that prevent its conventional use with accounts from other regions.

The launch expands the Japanese line introduced in November 2025, which already offered a digital edition at the same price and with the same limitations. Therefore, the new release does not represent a price reduction or the debut of regional restrictions, but a new color option.

The Midnight Black retains the main PS5 features, including compatibility with PS4 games, 3D audio, and DualSense controllers. Internal storage is 825 GB on an SSD, of which a portion is reserved for the operating system.

Disc drive raises PS5 price to ¥66,980

The new model does not have a built-in disc drive, but allows the accessory to be installed separately. Sony will launch a Midnight Black version of the drive for ¥11,980, also on November 19.

With the accessory, the total will cost ¥66,980, considering the suggested prices in Japan. Installation allows playing compatible games on physical media, but requires an internet connection for the initial pairing of the drive with the console.

The possibility of using discs remains relevant in light of another decision by the manufacturer. In July 2026, Sony announced that will stop producing discs for new PlayStation games starting in January 2028. Titles previously released on physical media will remain usable.

The Midnight Black is also part of a campaign that extends the console's warranty from one to two years. The condition applies to purchases made by March 31, 2027 and requires enrollment in the promotion.

Pre-orders for the console and the drive will begin on October 20, at participating stores and e-commerce platforms in Japan.
