The French company Scaleway announced on Tuesday (13) the construction of an artificial intelligence supercomputer in Sweden, equipped with AMD Instinct MI355X accelerators. It will be the company's first installation of this kind outside France, with capacity intended for startups, AI developers and European corporate clients.

Presented during the ai-PULSE 2026 conference in Paris, the project is described by the company as Europe's first commercial AI supercomputer based on AMD GPUs. The classification refers to commercial purpose: European research systems, such as LUMI in Finland, already use graphics processors from the manufacturer.

The infrastructure will use AMD's open software environment ROCm as an alternative to Nvidia's CUDA. The goal is to expand the hardware options available for training and running artificial intelligence models.

Servers will have eight AMD MI355X GPUs and liquid cooling

The configuration disclosed by Giga Computing, one of the project's suppliers, provides for GIGABYTE G4L3-ZX1-LAT4 servers, each equipped with eight AMD Instinct MI355X accelerators and two AMD EPYC 9005 processors.

Each GPU offers 288 GB of HBM3E memory, aimed at processing large AI models. The servers will be prepared for direct liquid cooling, necessary to manage the concentration of high-energy-consumption components.

The assembly and operation of the infrastructure will involve other specialized suppliers. The French company Bull will be responsible for equipment integration, cluster installation and hardware maintenance. HPE Networking will provide the high-performance Ethernet network, while VAST Data will handle the storage and data feeding platform.

Motul will supply the fluid used in the liquid cooling system. With AMD responsible for the accelerators and ROCm, the project brings together six main suppliers, distributed across processing, servers, integration, networking, storage and cooling.

Despite the technical detail, Scaleway has not yet disclosed the total number of GPUs, the final computing capacity, commercial prices or a precise date for making the service available. The individual server configuration, therefore, does not allow determining the full size of the supercomputer.

The choice of Sweden is related to the availability of low-carbon electricity and the expansion of Scaleway's commercial presence in northern Europe. The company entered the Swedish market in May 2026, through a partnership with telecommunications operator Tele2.

With the new project, the provider intends to make AMD processing capacity available on a commercial scale within the European Union, adding an infrastructure option for organizations that develop and run AI applications.
