On Tuesday (13), Shopify launched Shop MCP, an infrastructure that allows artificial intelligence agents to search for products, build carts and complete purchases directly in their interfaces. The new offering provides access to a catalog with more than 1 billion products and eliminates the need for individual agreements between the company and each AI assistant developer.
The service uses the Model Context Protocol (MCP), a standard that allows connecting AI systems to external tools. With a single integration, developers can use 17 tools to check prices and availability, personalize recommendations, process payments and track orders. Basic searches do not require an API key.
The opening expands the model Shopify had been developing with specific partners. In September, the company announced an integration with Meta to enable purchases through the Muse assistant. Now, MCP-compatible agents can access the commerce infrastructure without depending on an exclusive partnership.
New connection enables purchases even in stores outside Shopify
One of the most relevant features is the ability to complete orders in stores that do not use Shopify. In these cases, the consumer authorizes the transaction through the Shop app, while the agent receives the data for a single-use card to make the payment at the retailer's own checkout.
In stores that operate with Shopify, the process uses Shop Pay. The agent can select products, prepare the cart and initiate payment, taking advantage of addresses and financial information previously registered by the consumer.
Completion of the purchase requires user confirmation, including approval of the total amount and payment method. Authentication also allows viewing previous orders and tracking deliveries through the Shop app.
The change eliminates a step from the previous catalog integration flow. Previously, an agent could locate products but needed to forward the consumer to the seller's website to complete the transaction. With Shop MCP, payment can occur without leaving the assistant's interface.
The service is already available to developers of compatible agents. Existing integrations with the Catalog API continue to work without mandatory changes.
The launch, however, presents an operational limitation: the platform does not yet offer webhooks to automatically notify changes in purchase status. Developers need to periodically check the get_checkout tool to verify whether a transaction has been completed.
Orders placed by agents in Shopify stores appear normally in merchants' admin panel. For searches without authentication, the connection requires no credentials, although higher usage limits require an API key.
