Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) plans to expand its production capacity after demand for support chips used in AI servers exceeded expectations, co-CEO Zhao Haijun said on an earnings call.
Zhao said the volume of wafers entering production in the future “far exceeds” previous projections. The company is adjusting its expansion plans and evaluating the installation of additional equipment at existing facilities where space is available.
Demand concentrated in support chips
According to the executive, demand is especially strong for complementary chips in AI servers and data centers, including logic chips, power management products, and optical module components. Orders for BCD (bipolar-CMOS-DMOS) products for power management are already visible through the end of 2027.
The company is expected to disclose more details about the expansion in future announcements or briefings.
