A Nitro Games launched on Wednesday (23) Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun Boom for iOS and Android in major markets, bringing the retro shooter series to mobile with a strategy uncommon among major smartphone games: a free trial followed by a one-time payment to unlock the full game, with no ads or energy systems.

The game can be downloaded for free and unlocks the first three stages at no cost. After that, the user can purchase access to the rest of the campaign. Nitro describes the format as “free-to-try,” differentiating it from structures based on advertising, energy limits, or recurring monetization during progression.

The company had already signaled that this model would be part of the project's commercial strategy. In its first-half report, published in August, Nitro stated that Boltgun Boom had surpassed 700,000 pre-registrations before launch.

Boltgun adapts PC and console experience for smartphones

Boltgun Boom is a mobile adaptation of the series originally developed by Auroch Digital for PC and consoles. The new version brings together different chapters of the franchise and keeps the retro single-player FPS structure, but with controls and systems reworked for touch screens.

The campaign puts the player in the role of a Space Marine facing Chaos forces across multiple worlds. The proposal includes fast movement, weapons from the Warhammer 40,000 universe, and exploration of maps with paths and hidden areas.

The launch also expands Nitro Games' presence in projects based on external intellectual properties. The company had announced in April a licensing agreement with Games Workshop, owner of Warhammer 40,000, and officially presented Boltgun Boom the following month.
