Microsoft said that, starting in late August 2026, adult Xbox accounts in Australia will need to verify their age to access 18+ rated games and apps on the Microsoft Store and Xbox Store, both on console and PC. The measure is part of the company's compliance program with Australian regulations.
In a notification sent to users, Microsoft said access to such content may be restricted if verification is not completed. The company also assured that apps and games already purchased will not be affected by the new rule.
According to PC Gamer, London-based company VerifyMy will be responsible for managing age verification in Australia. Users will be able to confirm their age via email, facial scan, credit card, or government-issued ID.
The move in Australia comes after Microsoft, Sony, and Valve adopted age verification in the United Kingdom in compliance with the Online Safety Act. Sony extended the measure to Ireland, and in the case of PlayStation, verification became mandatory in June 2026, with the risk of losing access to communication features for those who do not verify.
