PlayFab (US, Microsoft) is the backend platform for live games: player accounts, a virtual economy, matchmaking, tournaments, LiveOps and analytics in one managed service. Microsoft acquired PlayFab in 2018 and folded it into Azure — today it is part of the company’s gaming offering.
What it does
- Manage accounts, login (including platform sign-in) and player profiles
- Build the virtual economy: catalog, currencies, stores and inventory
- Run managed matchmaking and tournaments
- Do LiveOps: events, feature flags, experiments and push
Products
Suites include Title (identity and data), Economy (catalogs and stores), Multiplayer (game servers via Azure PlayFab Multiplayer Servers, matchmaking), Engagement (quests, tournaments, notifications) and Insights/Analytics. It integrates with Unity, Unreal, custom engines and platforms (Xbox, PlayStation, Steam, mobile).
Public pricing
- Free tier to start (per-service limits)
- Usage-based charges above the limits (Essentials/Standard) and per game-server hour
- Enterprise under contract with Microsoft
Strengths
- A complete LiveOps set without building a backend from scratch
- Azure scale for dedicated match servers
- SDKs for every major engine and platform
Points of attention
- Pricing at scale grows with DAU and economy usage
- Moderate lock-in: data and logic live in the service
- Concepts (titles, cloud scripting) require initial study
