Steamworks (US, Valve) is the toolset for publishing and operating games on Steam — the world’s largest PC store. The Steamworks dashboard manages the store page, builds, pricing, events and data; the SDK wires achievements, cloud saves, workshop, matchmaking and DRM into the game.
What it does
- Publish and update builds on Steam (SteamPipe)
- Configure the store page, discount seasons and events
- Integrate achievements, cloud, workshop and stats via the SDK
- Track sales, wishlists, traffic and conversion in the dashboard
Products
Beyond the distribution pipeline, Steamworks has Steam Workshop (UGC), Steam Deck support, in-game microtransactions, localization, wishlist analytics and marketing tools (capsules, festivals). Steam is the dominant PC channel in Western markets.
Public pricing
- Steam Direct: US$ 100 per application fee, refundable once US$ 1,000 in sales is reached
- Revenue split: 70% developer / 30% Steam (lower in special deals for very large partners)
- No platform subscription
Strengths
- A huge, paying PC audience
- Discovery tooling (wishlists, launch festivals, recommendations)
- Mature UGC and community infrastructure
Points of attention
- Store approval and discovery are competitive — the storefront decides
- The 30% split weighs on low-ticket titles
- Steam reviews assess quality and compliance before publishing
