The franchise Call of Duty has reached US$ 40 billion in cumulative revenue, according to Asha Sharma, CEO of Xbox. The executive announced the milestone on Monday (26), three days after the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, but did not provide individual sales figures for the new game.
The figure represents the lifetime revenue of the franchise, launched in 2003, and not only the results of Modern Warfare 4. In a post on X, Sharma described the launch as one of the most celebrated games in the series in its 24-year history and called the financial milestone "an incredible milestone," congratulating the Activision team.
The result also represents an advance over the last major publicly disclosed threshold. In June 2022, Activision told The Washington Post that Call of Duty had surpassed US$ 30 billion in revenue and 425 million copies sold. Since then, the franchise has received new annual releases and continued operating free titles such as Warzone and Call of Duty: Mobile.
Modern Warfare 4 debuts outside Game Pass, but sales remain unknown
Despite the celebration, Microsoft has not yet disclosed how much Modern Warfare 4 earned in its first weekend, nor has it presented official unit sales figures. This prevents assessing how much the launch contributed to the new financial threshold.
The absence of these indicators contrasts with previous disclosures from Activision. In November 2022, the company announced that Modern Warfare II had generated more than US$ 800 million in sales in the first three days, setting, at the time, an opening record for the franchise.
The 2026 launch also marks a change in Xbox's commercial strategy. Unlike Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7, which have been available on Game Pass since launch, Modern Warfare 4 requires a separate purchase. Activision confirmed that the title will not be included in the subscription service before the 2027 holiday season.
Available since October 23, 2026 for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC, the new game brings together campaign, multiplayer and the DMZ extraction mode.
The cumulative revenue confirms the commercial scale of Call of Duty within the portfolio of Microsoft, which acquired Activision Blizzard in 2023. However, without disclosure of the individual results of Modern Warfare 4, it is still not possible to determine the financial performance of its debut or the effect of the decision to keep it out of Game Pass at launch.
