OpenAI reported on Monday (31) that ChatGPT Ads reached an annualized revenue pace of US$ 1 billion less than 200 days after launch. The company also expanded direct ad buying to India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.
The value does not mean that the company has already earned US$ 1 billion in advertising. The metric indicates how much the business would generate in 12 months if it maintained the current pace.
The platform already brings together tens of thousands of advertisers and is available in more than 40 countries. According to OpenAI, customers outside the United States represent a growing share of revenue, while large advertisers began running campaigns in several markets simultaneously.
OpenAI expands advertising operation
The expansion allows companies in the new regions to buy ads directly through Ads Manager, without relying on managed sales, agencies or partners.
The platform already offers pay-per-click, geographic targeting, custom audiences, product feeds and conversion tracking.
In one of the cases disclosed by OpenAI, an online retailer reported a return of three times the amount invested in 28 days. Another partner said that more than 80% of the traffic generated by the ads came from new customers. The numbers represent specific cases presented by the company.
Conversations help define the ads
The main difference compared with traditional advertising lies in the context available within ChatGPT. The system can use information from the current conversation to show ads related to what the user is looking for, their preferences and restrictions.
OpenAI says that the ads remain separate from the responses, do not interfere with the content generated by ChatGPT and do not allow advertisers to access users' private conversations.
With more than 1 billion active users per week, according to the company itself, ChatGPT offers a global-scale audience for the new advertising operation.
OpenAI plans to continue expanding ChatGPT Ads to other markets and to add new formats, campaign objectives and measurement tools.
