Coinbase announced the expansion of its derivatives offering for professional clients in the United Kingdom, with futures, options and perpetual contracts, through MiFID authorization. The service is not available to retail investors.

The release applies only to users classified as professional clients, which requires meeting criteria such as trading activity, portfolio size or relevant professional experience. Elective professional status may require, for example, a portfolio exceeding €500,000 or a minimum trading frequency.

Segmented market

The limited access occurs in a scenario in which the United Kingdom maintains restrictions on cryptocurrency derivatives for retail, while the professional and institutional market continues to develop within regulated frameworks. With this measure, Coinbase expands its presence in one of the major financial markets.

Derivatives enable hedging, risk management and more complex strategies, without requiring ownership of the underlying asset. The offering tends to be more relevant for assets such as bitcoin and ether, because professional demand starts with the most liquid markets, with tighter spreads and mature risk models.

Over time, this access can contribute to more efficient markets, although leverage can also amplify volatility during periods of concentrated positioning. The expansion is yet another sign of segmentation in the United Kingdom cryptocurrency market: retail investors remain subject to one set of rules, while professional clients have access to more advanced products.
