Guangdong Province in southern China and Alibaba signed a strategic cooperation agreement on Thursday, the 13th, to expand investments in computing power, artificial intelligence models and digital services, according to the state-run daily Nanfang Daily.
The agreement was signed in Guangzhou, Guangdong's capital, between provincial Communist Party secretary Huang Kunming and Alibaba chief executive Eddie Wu Yongming. The company, headquartered in Hangzhou, plans to increase its investments in the region in computing, AI and digital services.
Huang Kunming thanked Alibaba for its support for Guangdong's economic and social development and urged the company to intensify technological innovation, research and investment in the province.
The secretary highlighted potential synergies with energy and telecommunications companies to strengthen the province's computing capacity, as well as the application of AI models in consumer electronics, manufacturing equipment and health.
Huang also called for local products to be promoted through Alibaba's online shopping and cross-border e-commerce platforms.
Wu Yongming said Guangdong "has always been a central region" in Alibaba's strategic development, citing the province's economic strength, innovation ecosystem and large consumer market.
