JPMorgan announced this Monday (19) the expansion of JPM Coin (JPMD) to the Ethereum mainnet. The token represents dollar bank deposits and allows enabled institutional clients to make transfers directly on the blockchain, without relying on traditional bank processing hours.

The development expands the product's presence on public networks. JPMD had already been available since November 2025 on Base, a layer-2 blockchain developed by Coinbase atop Ethereum. The change, therefore, does not represent the launch of a new digital currency, but the expansion of a payments infrastructure that the bank already offers to institutions.

In a statement sent to The Block, JPMorgan's Kinexys division cited the liquidity available on Ethereum and the concentration of tokenized assets on the network as factors that justified the choice.

With the expansion, JPMD now allows transfers between enabled participants on both networks, Base and Ethereum, using infrastructure compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM).

JPMD is not a public stablecoin, and the US$ 4 trillion is not the token's volume

Although it operates on public blockchains, JPMD remains reserved for eligible institutional clients of JPMorgan. Availability on Ethereum does not mean that anyone with a digital wallet can freely acquire, receive or transfer the asset.

The distinction also involves its financial nature. Unlike a conventional stablecoin, issued as a digital asset intended for broader circulation, JPMD represents dollar deposits held at the bank itself. Its use remains tied to the banking structure and to the participation terms established by JPMorgan.

The model allows institutions to move tokenized deposits directly on the blockchain, with near-real-time settlement and continuous availability. The infrastructure was also designed for integration with smart contracts, though this does not mean that all possible applications are already available.

Another important point involves the figures presented by the bank.

According to JPMorgan, the Kinexys platform has already processed more than US$ 4 trillion in cumulative transactions, with an average daily volume of approximately US$ 7 billion.

These figures, however, correspond to the aggregate of Kinexys operations, which includes different payment services and blockchain-based financial infrastructure. They do not represent the volume moved by JPMD on Ethereum, nor the value of tokens issued on that network.

The expansion comes after other tokenization initiatives by the bank. In December 2025, JPMorgan launched its first tokenized money market fund on Ethereum, followed by another similar product in May 2026.

With JPMD now available on the mainnet, the bank adds a new deposit transfer option to the public infrastructure used by financial institutions and tokenized asset issuers, while maintaining control over who can access the service.
