The version of Monster Hunter Wilds for Nintendo Switch 2 began development around June 2025, about a year before Capcom publicly confirmed the project. The studio says the process required individual optimizations in different parts of the game and that the goal was to prevent the port from being perceived as merely an inferior version of the editions for other platforms.
The details were revealed in an interview with Famitsu during Tokyo Game Show 2026. Producer Genki Sunano said that initial work began in June of last year, while Ryozo Tsujimoto explained that development on a larger scale gained momentum near the end of 2025.
According to the team, the adaptation could not be done just by transferring data from the existing versions. Capcom initially faced staffing limitations and assembled a dedicated team when the main development of Wilds began freeing up staff for the new project.
Capcom rebuilt quality after getting the game to run
Executive Kaname Fujioka explained that the first step was simply making Monster Hunter Wilds run on Switch 2, even without achieving the quality required for a commercial product. From that base, the developers began recovering visual quality and performance element by element.
The team acknowledges that there are differences compared with the more powerful versions. Famitsu itself pointed out frame rate differences during the test at the event, and Sunano said that visual comparisons with the PS5 Pro version also reveal differences.
The priority, however, was maintaining the core hunting experience. Fujioka said the team did not want the release to be treated simply as a degraded version of Wilds, while Sunano said the goal is to allow the player to have on Switch 2 a hunting experience close to that offered on the other platforms.
Monster Hunter Wilds arrives on Nintendo Switch 2 on December 4, 2026. The version will have cross-play with other platforms, local wireless multiplayer, and all previously released Free Title Updates. Capcom also confirmed that the expansion Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, planned for 2027, will have a version for Nintendo's console.
The game was originally released in February 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The existence of the Switch 2 edition was only officially announced in June 2026, about a year after the start of the initial work now revealed by the team.
