OpenAI launched this Monday (26) the GPT-6.1 Terra, an artificial intelligence model developed to interpret visual information and perform tasks directly on computers. The new release arrives with API prices 50% lower than those of GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol, expanding the possibilities for automating professional activities on a large scale.
The model combines image recognition, visual reasoning and the ability to operate applications. Among the examples presented by the company are filling out forms, interpreting technical drawings, editing videos and transferring information from invoices to accounting systems.
In the API, GPT-6.1 Terra costs US$ 1 per million input tokens, US$ 0.05 per million cached input tokens and US$ 5 per million output tokens. The reduction seeks to make operations that require a large volume of processing and continuous interaction with software economically viable.
Tests point to gains in performance and accuracy
On Agents' Last Exam, an evaluation of professional tasks performed with digital tools, GPT-6.1 Terra obtained a score 15 points higher, measured in percentage points, than that of GPT-5.6 Terra, at approximately one-third of the cost per task, according to tests released by OpenAI.
The company also claims that the new model performs tasks more than three times faster than GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol. In visual reasoning evaluations, Terra showed results close to those of the company's most advanced models, although at a lower computational cost.
Another advance appears in response accuracy. In an internal test with questions prone to factual errors, the rate of incorrect answers fell from 53.6% to 16.7%, considering the low reasoning level. The figures are results of OpenAI's own evaluations.
In programming, the model solved 50.3% of the problems in Terminal-Bench 4.0 at its maximum reasoning level, compared with 21.5% recorded by its predecessor. OpenAI notes, however, that GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra remain more suitable alternatives for especially complex programming tasks.
GPT-6.1 Terra is already available in ChatGPT Work and Codex for users of the Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu plans. Developers can also access the model through the API, using the identifier `gpt-6.1-terra`. The launch does not include its availability in the conventional ChatGPT chat.
