Ripple has expanded the XRPL AI Starter Kit to allow artificial intelligence agents to make payments through the XRP Ledger using the Machine Payments Protocol (MPP), an open standard developed by Stripe and the Tempo blockchain. The update adds support for XRP and assets issued on the ledger, including the stablecoin RLUSD.
MPP allows software to automatically pay for resources such as data, APIs and computing capacity. In the flow documented by Ripple, an agent requests a resource, receives the price through the code HTTP 402 Payment Required, authorizes the transaction and gains access to the service.
The SDK includes payments in XRP and tokens issued on the XRP Ledger, as well as a demonstration in which an API receives RLUSD on the testnet.
Ripple also targets micropayments between agents
The implementation uses the Payment Channels of the XRP Ledger for continuous payments in XRP. The model allows a sequence of small transactions to be carried out without individually recording each use on the blockchain, leaving only the opening and final settlement of the channel to the network.
Ripple also integrated the Open Wallet Standard, which allows agents to request transactions without receiving direct access to private keys. The system can impose restrictions such as spending limits and authorized destinations.
The company had already added support for the protocol x402. By also integrating MPP, it seeks to make XRP and RLUSD compatible with different standards that are emerging for automated payments between agents, APIs and digital services.
The integration does not mean that Stripe has started accepting XRP or RLUSD in its conventional checkout. The XRP Ledger works as a payment option within MPP. The SDK is still in beta, and no commercial clients or transaction volume have been disclosed.
