Investment firm Silver Lake and Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund, the Public Investment Fund (PIF), have held talks in recent weeks about a possible acquisition of Unity Software, according to a report published by Reuters on Thursday (5). The group of investors even discussed a valuation of approximately US$ 25 billion, but there is no guarantee that the negotiations will result in an agreement.
The approaches took place before the release of Unity's quarterly results, which raised its market value to about US$ 21.5 billion. According to people familiar with the talks, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity, the company is working with an investment bank to assess its alternatives after the interest from potential buyers.
A potential transaction would take one of the leading suppliers of game development tools private. The Unity game engine is used to create thousands of titles for mobile devices, computers and consoles, as well as applications in areas such as architecture, film and industrial simulation.
Who the investors mentioned are and what has not yet been agreed
Silver Lake already owns approximately 8% of Unity's shares and has a long-standing relationship with the company. The investment firm invested up to US$ 400 million in the developer in 2017 and has Egon Durban, one of its top executives, on its board of directors.
The investment firm and PIF also took part in the consortium responsible for the acquisition of Electronic Arts (EA), completed in August 2026 for US$ 55 billion. The transaction, which also involved Affinity Partners, took the producer of franchises such as EA Sports FC private.
The news about Unity comes on the same day that the company reported quarterly revenue of US$ 622.1 million, growth of 32% compared with the previous year. The company also recorded its first quarterly profit under GAAP accounting standards since its initial public offering in 2020, driven by the performance of its advertising and game development businesses.
Despite the financial results, the talks about an acquisition remain uncertain. Unity declined to comment to Reuters on the report, while Silver Lake and PIF did not immediately respond to requests for comment. No definitive agreement has been announced, and both the terms and the completion of the transaction itself may still change.
