The new expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will take Geralt of Rivia to an all-new region with its own cultural identity, new monsters, and changes to the combat system. During the Lucca Comics & Games 2026 festival in Italy, developers from CD Projekt RED and Fool's Theory revealed details of Songs of the Past, the third expansion for the RPG, slated for 2027.

In an interview with IGN, designer Miles Tost explained that the Letten region was conceived to offer an exploration experience different from the game's known areas. While Skellige is characterized by mountains and sea travel, the new territory combines influences from the British aristocracy with elements of Polish rural architecture.

The regional identity also guided the creation of creatures and activities. One of the examples presented was the Bracket, a drink that mixes honey and beer and whose production depends on ingredients such as honey and hops.

These resources are part of the local economy and directly influence the environment. The new monster Swarmion, shown in the expansion's demonstrations, is attracted to honey and uses hornets as a defense mechanism. According to Tost, the team sought to establish relationships between the inhabitants' customs, natural resources, and the creatures encountered by players.

New weapon can be used in other regions of the game

In addition to the setting, Songs of the Past will introduce a chain as a new weapon for Geralt. In an interview with CGMagazine, Tost explained that the tool will be able to exploit enemies' weak points, perform special finishers, and help when taking on multiple opponents.

The most relevant detail is that the chain can also be used outside Letten, including the regions already existing in The Witcher 3. Therefore, the new feature will not be restricted to the expansion's territory.

The story will have Dandelion, Geralt's friend, as its central figure, and he will receive greater narrative depth. Writer Paula Mejsner of Fool's Theory explained that the adventure will explore the bard's family, childhood friends, and past, presenting aspects of his personality that were little developed in the original game.

The preservation of narrative continuity also received special attention. Mejsner told IGN that the writers regularly consult a team specialized in the history of The Witcher books and games to avoid contradictions with established events.

Tost cited Regis's return in Blood and Wine as an example of a narrative decision that required an explanation compatible with the franchise's universe, despite the character's seemingly definitive fate in the books.

Songs of the Past will be released in 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, being jointly developed by CD Projekt RED and Fool's Theory. The expansion will mark Geralt's return to a new adventure more than a decade after the original release of The Witcher 3, in 2015.
