The Universal Music Group (UMG) and ElevenLabs announced a multiyear agreement on Thursday (10) to develop a music creation platform with artificial intelligence based on licensed content. The service will allow fans to create remixes, mashups and new interpretations of songs by participating artists.
The agreement is the first for ElevenLabs with a major record label and provides for the joint development of AI audio products for artists, songwriters and fans. The platform is still in development and no release date has been announced.
Artists will participate in the economic model
Participation will be voluntary, and artists and songwriters included in the initiative are expected to receive part of the value generated by the new experiences. The proposal is to structure the use of protected songs within an environment authorized by rights holders.
In addition to remixes and mashups, the platform should allow new interpretations of tracks and personalized experiences involving voices. The service will operate separately from the tools that ElevenLabs already offers for creating original songs.
The agreement reinforces Universal's strategy of establishing licensed commercial models for music generated or modified by AI, amid the industry dispute over copyrights and the use of catalogs by generative systems.
