Walmart recorded 23% growth in global e-commerce in the 2nd quarter, driven by the advance of online sales in the United States, deliveries made from stores and the expansion of the marketplace, according to the balance sheet released by the company on August 20.

In the United States, e-commerce advanced 24%, while deliveries made by stores grew 40%. The marketplace's net sales increased more than 50% in the period.

Digital gains weight in the operation

The expansion occurred in a quarter in which Walmart's total revenue grew 5.9%. The company highlighted the demand for convenience and faster deliveries among the factors that sustained the performance.

About 23% of Walmart's sales in the United States already go through e-commerce. At Sam's Club, online sales grew 26%, while the international operation recorded an advance of 19%.

Walmart said it will continue investing in technology and in the integration between physical stores and digital channels, as well as expanding businesses such as marketplace, advertising and fulfillment services.
