OpenAI has added a virtual try on feature for clothing and accessories to ChatGPT, along with the ability to save products to Favorites, expanding the number of shopping steps users can complete inside the platform. The features were announced on Thursday (Oct. 1) and are available on ChatGPT for web and mobile.
In shopping results for clothing and accessories, users can now find a “Try on” button. From there, they can take or upload a selfie so ChatGPT can generate an image showing how a specific product may look on them. The feature uses the platform’s image generation system.
The reference photo can be saved for future virtual try ons, removing the need to upload it again for every product. Users can later replace or delete the image through ChatGPT’s personalization settings. They can also upload an image of a piece of clothing or an accessory directly into a conversation and ask to see how it would look on them.
OpenAI warns that generated images do not guarantee accurate sizing or fit and may not reproduce the exact appearance of the product or the person. Measurements, seller information and return policies therefore remain important references before completing a purchase.
Products can now stay inside ChatGPT
The second addition is Favorites. Any product found through ChatGPT can be saved using a bookmark and stored in the Library. Users can also create folders to organize different products and return to them later.
The feature adds a step that previously often depended on retailer websites, open browser tabs or external wish lists. ChatGPT could already surface products, prices and information from different merchants, while allowing users to compare options and search according to preferences shared in the conversation.
For certain products and merchants, the platform also offers Instant Checkout, allowing users to complete a purchase without leaving ChatGPT. The feature is not available for every product, and merchants remain responsible for order processing, delivery, returns and customer support.
With virtual try on and Favorites, ChatGPT now covers more stages of the same shopping journey: product discovery, comparison, visualization, saving items for later and, in some cases, payment. OpenAI says product results are selected independently and are not advertisements, while ads are displayed separately on the platform.
