Nintendo announced on Wednesday (9) Metroid Ravenous, a new 2D adventure starring Samus Aran that will be released exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2 on January 28, 2027. The game was revealed during a Nintendo Direct presentation.
In the new story, Samus is attacked by unknown enemies and becomes trapped on an unidentified moon. The bounty hunter will have to traverse labyrinthine ruins, recover her arsenal, and face bosses while seeking a way to escape.
One of the main changes is in the protagonist's abilities. Ravenous introduces “Metroid instincts”, which allow Samus to devour enemies, adding a new mechanic to the traditional combat based on beams, missiles, and exploration.
Samus returns to the 2D format after Metroid Dread
The announcement marks the series' return to the 2D format after Metroid Dread, released for the first Nintendo Switch in October 2021. The previous title resumed the main line of Samus's side-scrolling adventures after a 19-year gap since Metroid Fusion.
Nintendo also confirmed an amiibo collection for Ravenous. Individual figures of Samus and a Chozo statue will arrive alongside the game, while a third Samus amiibo with the Metroid Suit will be included in a special edition accompanied by a metal box. The standard and special versions will be released on the same date.
Nintendo's Brazilian page also states that Metroid Ravenous will have Brazilian Portuguese among the available languages and an estimated size of 20.2 GB. The game will have handheld, tabletop and TV modes and one-player support.
