Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action film set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, in partnership with CD Projekt RED and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, known for the Transformers franchise. The project was revealed this Thursday (8), at a moment when the game has already surpassed 40 million copies sold. The adaptation is still in the development stage, with no director, cast or release date announced.
Michał Nowakowski, co-executive president of CD Projekt RED, publicly confirmed the interest in the partnership, stating that Paramount shares the developer's creative ambitions for the franchise. The Polish company, which holds the rights to Cyberpunk 2077, will also take part in the film production, according to TheWrap's reporting.
The announcement had immediate repercussions in the financial market. CD Projekt RED shares rose about 3% in Friday morning (9) trading, according to Reuters. The developer did not present additional information about the project beyond Nowakowski's statement.
Film advances while sequel brings together 184 developers
The film expansion comes after the franchise reached new commercial milestones. On July 3, 2026, Cyberpunk 2077 reached 40 million units sold, including copies sold separately and in the Ultimate Edition. The Phantom Liberty expansion also surpassed 15 million copies, according to data released by CD Projekt RED.
In parallel, the company continues development of the sequel to the RPG released in 2020. On July 31, 184 professionals were working on the new game, which still has no public release schedule. The numbers predate the film announcement and demonstrate the activity already existing around the intellectual property.
Paramount's production still presents open questions. No screenwriter, director or cast members were disclosed, nor details about the plot. There is also no confirmation that the feature film will directly adapt the game's story or feature well-known characters, such as Johnny Silverhand, played by Keanu Reeves.
For now, the partnership confirms the intention to bring the Cyberpunk 2077 universe to theaters, but does not establish a schedule for filming or distribution. CD Projekt RED stated that new details will be shared in due course.
