The Bungie delayed to December 8 the next major update for Marathon, previously planned for September 22, and announced on Monday (14) that it will no longer tie the game's major releases to a rigid seasonal calendar. The change gives the studio more time to develop and test new features before putting them live.

The content planned for September will be incorporated into the Symbiosis, which will feature the first permanent PvE experience in Marathon. The package will also include a revamped version of the Perimeter zone, a new Runner frame, a social space with a shooting range, an experimental Team Deathmatch mode, and improvements to the experience for new players.

Before that, Bungie will release a smaller update on October 6. It will reset player progression and the in-game economy, bring a new rewards pass, and include quality-of-life adjustments, balancing, and changes to the live game.

The reset comes after problems identified in the 2nd season, Nightfall. According to the studio, issues with progression pacing and rewards caused some players to advance quickly to endgame content while others fell behind, harming the extraction experience and the intended effect of the seasonal reset.

The PvE mode Vault Breaker will also return for a limited time after the October update. Bungie intends to use data from the activity to evaluate how PvE experiences can be integrated into the game's permanent progression. During the eight weeks leading up to Symbiosis, the studio also plans to run new gameplay experiments.

Bungie leaves three-month calendar behind

The change represents a revision of the structure announced before the launch of Marathon. In March, Bungie had set seasons with an approximate duration of three months, accompanied by progression resets and new content, such as weapons, zones, Runner shells, and events.

In June, the studio still expected the start of the 3rd season on September 22, with a Perimeter overhaul, a new Runner frame, new weapons and equipment. That schedule was replaced by the new model, in which major updates will no longer need to coincide with fixed seasonal deadlines.

Bungie stated that the decision responds to feedback that Marathon needs more depth, variety, progression, and reasons to keep players active in the long term. After Symbiosis, the studio already anticipates new, larger experiences for March 2027, but has not yet detailed the content.
