Fiserv, one of the leading global providers of payments technology, recorded a US$ 6.45 billion accounting write-down in the third quarter of 2026. The adjustment, disclosed on Tuesday (3), led the company to report a significant loss, while revenue declined and management announced an expansion of its cost-reduction program.

Quarterly revenue was US$ 5.20 billion, down 1% compared with the same period of 2025. Organic revenue remained flat, with a 2% decline in the merchant solutions division and 2% growth in services for financial institutions.

Most of the accounting impact came from a reduction in the recoverable value of goodwill, an asset that represents expected future economic benefits from acquisitions. According to the financial documentation, the review was triggered by persistent declines in the company's share price and market value.

The write-down does not represent an immediate outflow of cash. It is the recognition that part of the value previously attributed to these assets can no longer be supported by the accounting valuations.

Accounting loss contrasts with adjusted profit and lower margins

The effect on results was significant. Under U.S. accounting standards (GAAP), Fiserv reported a loss of US$ 11.17 per share. Excluding the goodwill write-down and other adjustments, the company reported adjusted profit of US$ 1.75 per share.

This difference does not mean that operations remained immune to the financial deterioration. Adjusted profit also fell from the US$ 2.04 per share reported in the third quarter of 2025.

Adjusted operating margin fell from 37% to 31.2%, indicating pressure on profitability even after excluding the extraordinary accounting effects.

In response to the scenario, the company raised from US$ 500 million to US$ 1 billion the savings target of Project Elevate, an operational reorganization program. The revision occurred after an assessment of the business portfolio and the identification of new efficiency opportunities.

The new figure represents a projected target, not savings already realized. According to CFO Paul Todd, part of the expected benefits should appear only in 2027 or later.

The reorganization also involves changes to the portfolio. In the quarter, Fiserv completed the sale of its student loan servicing business and the formation of the MoneyPass Group joint venture, in which it retained a minority stake.

In addition to these completed transactions, management has begun talks with potential buyers of other assets considered non-strategic. CEO Takis Georgakopoulos told analysts that it is still too early to estimate the amounts these possible transactions could generate.

Despite the adjustments, the company maintained its guidance for 2026, with organic revenue ranging from a 1% decline to stability and adjusted profit of US$ 7.20 to US$ 7.40 per share. It also announced its intention to repurchase US$ 500 million in shares in the fourth quarter.
