An estimate from hardware leaker Kepler_L2 indicates that the component cost of the future PlayStation 6 would have reached about US$ 960. The calculation has not been confirmed by Sony and does not represent the console's sale price.
In March, Kepler_L2 had estimated the bill of materials (BOM) — the cost of components used in manufacturing — at approximately US$ 760. In an update published in June on the NeoGAF forum, he stated that the value had increased by about US$ 200.
The estimate does not present a verifiable breakdown of costs by component and, so far, Sony has not disclosed technical specifications, price or launch date for its next generation.
Sony acknowledges pressure on costs
The company acknowledged this year that rising memory prices are increasing the production costs of its consoles. Sony also told investors that it does not intend to fully absorb these increases or sell hardware at significant losses.
The company has already confirmed investments in the development of its next platform, but has not yet officially announced the PlayStation 6. Thus, the US$ 960 remain a projection based on Kepler_L2's information and may change before mass production.
