The Macau Finance Secretariat announced that casino revenues totaled US$ 7.2 billion in the 1st half of 2026, up 9%. Taxes from the sector accounted for 84.6% of regional revenue collection, which totaled US$ 8.5 billion.

The region ended the period with a fiscal surplus of nearly US$ 2 billion, 30% higher than in the previous year.

Diversification plan

The government presented a three-year strategic plan to reduce dependence on the gaming industry. The Secretary for Economy and Finance, Ng Wai-han, said the goal is to raise the contribution of companies not linked to the sector to 60% of GDP by 2030.

Currently, gaming accounts for 45% to 60% of GDP. Ng Wai-han acknowledged that the region has a "strong dependence on the gaming industry."

To meet the goal, the authorities will boost traditional tourism and invest in medicine, specialized finance, technology and sports, with a relaxation of rules for these businesses.

Macau International Airport recorded nearly 3.9 million passengers in the 1st half, up 8% compared with 2025.

In the casino sector, Melco Resorts and Entertainment announced the pre-opening of Hotel REM at the City of Dreams complex in Cotai. The hotel has 149 rooms for VIP guests, with a dining area, outdoor pool and outdoor gym.

The pre-opening takes place in an exclusive, private program for guests. The official opening to the public is scheduled for October. The betting sector maintains investments to reach the goal of collecting US$ 29 billion in the year.
