Microsoft unveiled on Friday (25) an overhaul of Copilot that brings together productivity, software creation, and autonomous agents on a single platform. The product is now organized into three areas — Home, Code, and Autopilot — and incorporates Word, Excel, and PowerPoint directly into the experience.
The Copilot Home will be the entry point to the platform and combines Chat with Cowork, a feature aimed at delegating longer tasks. With the so-called Office in Copilot, users will be able to create and edit documents, spreadsheets, and presentations without leaving the environment.
Microsoft also intends to make the system automatically choose the most suitable tool. In a future update, the user will be able to describe the task and Copilot will decide whether to route it to Chat, Cowork, or Code.
The Copilot Code takes the platform into development. The tool uses GitHub Copilot technology to enable the creation of applications, dashboards, automations, and workflows through natural language. The solutions will be able to run on infrastructure managed by Microsoft within the corporate environment.
Autopilot keeps tasks running
The third front is Autopilot, a persistent agent that can continue executing jobs in the cloud even when the user is not present. It can monitor channels, run recurring routines, resume projects, and request updates from other participants.
Each agent operates within the organization's environment with its own identity, memory, and workspace, maintaining permissions and administrative controls.
Microsoft also expanded connections to corporate data and announced a centralized plugin registry. At the same time, Cowork, Code, and Autopilot will have consumption-based billing, accompanied by FinOps controls to monitor spending, usage, and available models.
Home and Code will begin arriving in the Frontier program in the coming weeks, while Autopilot enters expanded private preview at the end of September.
