Open Standard launched, on Wednesday (30), the Open USD (OUSD), a dollar stablecoin created with Coinbase, Mastercard, Shopify, Stripe and Visa as founding partners. The asset is issued by Bridge, a Stripe company, and debuts with native support for Ethereum, Base, Solana and Tempo.
The structure comes to market with more than 200 partner companies and institutions. The five founders also committed to helping establish more than US$ 1 billion in initial liquidity for the ecosystem.
Companies can issue and redeem OUSD at a ratio of 1 to 1 with the dollar, with no additional mint and burn fees. Stripe, BVNK and the Visa Stablecoin Platform already offer integration paths, while access through Coinbase begins this Thursday (1st). Mastercard is also among the integration options made available by Open Standard.
The token's reserves are held with BlackRock, Lead Bank and BNY. Bridge reported that monthly attestations will be published about the assets that back the stablecoin. OUSD also begins to arrive in trading environments such as Coinbase, Kraken and Uniswap.
Partners participate in the stablecoin economy
The project's economic differentiator lies in how the revenue generated by the stablecoin is distributed. Instead of concentrating practically all the return from the reserves in the issuer, Open Standard provides for partners to receive rewards according to the supply and activity of OUSD that they generate on their platforms. They will also be able to obtain an equity stake in Open Standard itself.
The model seeks to turn companies responsible for the distribution and use of the asset into direct participants in its economy. Open Standard states that most of the revenue from the reserves will go to the ecosystem, after deducting an administration fee to fund the operation.
The strategy gains scale from the founders' presence at different points in the payments infrastructure. Coinbase operates in crypto asset trading and custody, Mastercard and Visa operate global payment networks, Shopify concentrates a broad base of online merchants and Stripe provides financial infrastructure for digital companies.
At Stripe, OUSD has already been integrated into products such as Treasury, Issuing, Global Payouts, Payments and Crypto Onramp. The company also designated the token on the Tempo network as its default stablecoin configuration, although customers can still choose other assets and blockchains.
