The Sony Interactive Entertainment asked that a multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part II Remastered for PC not be released, according to the project's creator, known as Speclizer. The mod had been in development since January and had a public release planned for September 2026.

Speclizer reported on Sunday (13) that he received a letter on Sony's behalf requesting that the project not be made available. The developer stated that, given the request, the mod will not reach the public and that his next work will be based on an original property.

The contents of the letter were not disclosed, and Sony has not publicly presented a detailed justification for the intervention. Therefore, it is not confirmed whether the decision is related to copyright, monetization or another aspect of the project.

Mod recreated multiplayer inspired by Factions

The mod sought to create a competitive experience inspired by Factions, the multiplayer mode of the first The Last of Us. A demo published by Speclizer in June showed about 25 minutes of gameplay and confirmed that the PC version was planned for September.

Later updates showed 4 versus 4 matches, matchmaking, equipment selection, and other features typical of a multiplayer experience. The project used the version of The Last of Us Part II Remastered for PC and did not have official involvement from Naughty Dog or Sony.

The halt comes nearly three years after Naughty Dog canceled its own multiplayer project for the franchise, The Last of Us Online. In December 2023, the studio stated that keeping the game as a service would require directing resources to ongoing content for years, harming the development of new single-player titles.

With the cancellation of the mod, there is currently no other multiplayer mode announced for The Last of Us Part II. Speclizer also did not indicate plans to distribute the project through alternative means.
