A Tencent announced this Monday (12) a proposed international issuance of debt securities, after recording a sharp expansion in investments in technology infrastructure. The deal does not yet have a defined amount, but could raise at least US$ 4.5 billion, according to information obtained by Reuters.
The amount was reported by a source with direct knowledge of the transaction and does not constitute a target officially confirmed by the company. In a statement to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX), Tencent presented the proposal within its global debt program, without announcing a definitive agreement.
The deal could involve four series of bonds: two denominated in US dollars, with maturities of 10 and 20 years, and two others in yuan traded outside China, with terms of 10 and 30 years. The terms appear in a preliminary document reviewed by Reuters and may still change according to investor demand.
Tencent's capital expenditures have already surpassed the 2025 total
The difference lies in the financial figures presented along with the proposal. Tencent recorded 96.3 billion yuan in capital expenditures in the first half of 2026, compared with 45.9 billion yuan in the same period a year earlier, a growth of approximately 110%.
The amount also exceeds the 88.3 billion yuan invested during all of 2025, according to data disclosed by the company itself.
These expenses include computing equipment, components, software and data centers, as well as investments in real estate and intellectual property. Therefore, the total does not correspond exclusively to spending on artificial intelligence, although Tencent has identified the expansion of its infrastructure and its AI applications among its technology priorities.
The company also stated that it considers its financial resources and its operating cash flow sufficient to cover the expected operating and investment needs for the next 12 months.
The potential fundraising comes just four months after another bond issuance, completed in June, that raised approximately US$ 4.66 billion.
For now, the new deal remains subject to market conditions, Tencent's financing needs and investor interest. The October 12 statement emphasizes that no binding agreement had been signed and that the issuance may not materialize.
