A Anthropic is in early negotiations to lease up to 1 gigawatt (GW) of computing capacity from Stream Data Centers, a data center operator majority-controlled by funds of Apollo Global Management. The company is weighing becoming a direct tenant of the facilities, in a move to gain more control over the infrastructure used to train and operate its artificial intelligence models, according to The Information.

The facilities could house TPUs designed by Google and Broadcom, in addition to Nvidia GPUs or other AI accelerators. The talks also include the possibility of Google providing some type of credit guarantee for the project, although it is not yet defined which obligations would be covered.

The financial scale would be high. Data center developers interviewed by The Information estimate that 1 GW of computing capacity would require at least US$ 40 billion in capital investment. The negotiations remain at an early stage, and there is no definitive agreement announced, deployment timeline or confirmed location for the capacity under discussion.

Anthropic seeks more direct control over data centers

The negotiation represents a shift from the model through which Anthropic currently obtains much of its capacity, leasing servers from cloud providers. The company already maintains large agreements with groups such as Amazon and Google, but direct contracts with data center operators could expand its control over hardware, capacity and infrastructure costs.

In April, Anthropic announced an agreement with Amazon to secure up to 5 GW of new capacity, including nearly 1 GW additional by the end of 2026. The company also expanded its partnership with Google and Broadcom for several gigawatts of TPU-based capacity starting in 2027, within a strategy that distributes its workloads across different types of chips.

Stream Data Centers came under majority control of funds managed by Apollo in November 2025. The company operates and develops large data center campuses in the United States and had, at the conclusion of the acquisition, a pipeline of more than 4 GW, in addition to more than 20 campuses already delivered.

If completed, the deal with Stream would expand Anthropic's strategy of securing computing capacity at gigawatt scale without depending exclusively on the infrastructure offered by large cloud providers. For now, however, the terms remain under negotiation and neither party has announced a definitive contract.
