Google began expanding the direct checkout in Search's AI Mode and Gemini to eligible Shopify stores in the United States, allowing consumers to find a product and complete the purchase without visiting the retailer's site. The integration uses the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), a standard developed by Google in partnership with Shopify itself and other retail companies.
At Shopify, the feature is being rolled out through Agentic Storefronts and is enabled by default for eligible stores. To participate, the merchant must be based in the United States, sell to customers in the country, maintain a valid Google Merchant Center account, and make qualified products available in the catalog.
When direct checkout is active, the consumer can select the purchase option within AI Mode or Gemini, enter delivery and payment details, and complete the order without accessing the online store. Outside the United States, products can still appear in Google experiences, but the user is redirected to the merchant's site to complete the transaction.
Merchants can disable direct checkout in the Shopify dashboard. In that case, products remain eligible for discovery in AI Mode and Gemini through Merchant Center, but the purchase step once again takes place on the store's website.
Checkout within Google changes part of measurement
The change also alters how some interactions can be measured. According to Shopify's documentation, Google Analytics and custom client-side pixels do not fire in checkout completed within AI Mode or Gemini. The platform keeps only server-to-server events related to the start and completion of the purchase.
Some traditional checkout functions are also left out. The list includes certain custom blocks, product bundles, subscriptions, customizable products, and loyalty or upsell experiences. Shipping, discount, and compatible validation functions remain available.
Shopify states that it does not charge a specific additional fee for sales completed through this channel; normal payment processing fees still apply. Google, in turn, structured UCP so that the retailer remains as merchant of record, retaining responsibility for the sale even when the purchase interface belongs to the AI platform.
UCP was introduced by Google in January as an open infrastructure to connect AI interfaces, retailers, and payment systems. With the expansion of checkout to Shopify stores, the technology begins to take Google beyond product discovery: part of the journey between search and payment starts to happen within the AI interfaces themselves.
