A Blizzard Entertainment announced on Saturday (12), during BlizzCon 2026, the development of Diablo V, the next main game in the franchise. The release is scheduled for spring 2029 in the Northern Hemisphere, with no specific date announced yet.

The new title will start from a central change in the series' story: this time, Diablo has already won. Sanctuary was dominated, the former heroes were defeated, and the player takes on the role of the Heir of Westmarch in a world controlled by the Lord of Terror.

Blizzard states that Diablo V is still in an early stage of development. The reveal, therefore, occurs about two and a half years before the planned release window, and the company plans to begin publishing regular updates about the project in 2027.

Diablo V will have new classes and inspiration from Diablo II

The developer presented three of the classes planned for the game. Demon Hunter and Monk will return to the franchise, while Plague Knight will be an all-new class based on the use of diseases during combat. Other classes will be presented throughout development.

The item system will also look for references in Diablo II. Blizzard confirmed the return of equipment sets, Runes and Runewords, and stated that it is again testing attribute requirements for certain items. Larger items may also take up more spaces in the inventory.

The announcement comes three years after the release of Diablo IV, in 2023. Blizzard will continue updating the current game while focusing part of the team on the development of Diablo V. The franchise will also get an animated series produced in partnership with Netflix, announced during the same BlizzCon.
